La Jeunesse Dominicaine Saint Martin de Porres - Kigali
(or Dominican Youth Movement Kigali) is part of an International Dominican Youth Movement. It supports young Catholics mostly from
the Dominican community at Kacyiru, bringing them together to discuss their
faith and related issues, to provide opportunities for study, prayer, charity and
to share fun experiences and make new friends.
Mission
The
International Dominican Youth Movement was founded with the idea of connecting
young people all over the world and making them partners in the mission of evangelization.
It is a way for the Dominican Friars to invite into their mission faithful
young people, who can bring the Gospel to their peers.
“The challenge of evangelization of the
young certainly calls on us to promote the groups that may take part in the
coordination of these Youth Movements, not as pastoral groups for young people,
but rather as groups of young missionaries to the young.”
– Father Bruno Cadoré, Master of the
Dominican Order.
With a close collaboration with Dominican friars different events are organized throughout the year to provide opportunities for Prayer and Faith Formation in the spirit of St Dominic and his Order, Study of the Scriptures and the Catholic Tradition to enable dialogue with others, and Recreation together as a group. The aim of all this is to enable young people to collaborate with the Dominican friars, sisters and laity as young Preachers of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, witnessing to Him in their own local communities, parishes, and life.
Main Activities
Study
In
collaboration with the Dominican friars, the group receives different lectures
from experts in different fields (Faith, Sex education, career guidance...).
The group is now working on starting a Bible study program as well.
Prayer
Prayer is so essential to Christian life that
it is among our main activities. We are mainly active in the Saturday evening
mass which started as a youth mass but now receives people from all ages. We
also organize different prayers sessions and novenas for special needs.
Charity
During Lent and
Advent, the community collects clothes, money and all sort of aid for those in
need and the weekend before Easter or Christmas everything is given to a
particular group or distributed among different people.
Help the Friars
As part of the
Dominican Family we are often called to help organize or offer our hand in
preparation of big events of the community. And usually when Dominican novices
are out for retreat, we take the duty of cleaning the church and some of their
other tasks.
Fun
During holidays
there is always one day to meet and share a drink or two, welcoming new
members, getting to know each other… We also visit each other and meet for
other events in our respective families.
